Firestorm Major Release 4.3.1.31155

The time has come once again to deliver to our users another "major" update of the Firestorm Viewer. We may not have the shortest release cycles compared to other TPVs, but our updates do carry a LOT of value. This release is certainly no different, with a HUGE list of new features, bug fixes and improvements.

Major Release Feature Highlights...

* Fully integrated Phototools & Cameratools for photographers and machinima makers by Paperwork (our newest member):
    - Phototools is a phenomenally powerful interface for creating visually stunning and breathtaking environments best suited for Photographers and Videographers.
    - Cameratools gives you far more control over your camera, including the ability to save camera position presets.
    - Click to see examples of what can be done.
    - Click for documentation on Phototools.
    - Click for documentation on Cameratools.
    - Or best of all... click for the amazing video tutorials!

* V1 Search functionality revival by our newest developer, Cinder Roxley:
    - Cinder wasted no time making her mark on the project by bringing to Firestorm one of the single most requested options since V2 came out.
    - V1 Search is available under the Content menu as "Legacy Search" and as a Toolbar button.
    - Ability to search People, Groups, Places and Classifieds.
    - This optional search method is a work in progress, more to come!

Script recovery by Kitty Barnett of Catznip Viewer:
    - Open scripts are auto-saved locally every 60 seconds.
    - In the event of a viewer crash, backed up copies of the scripts are presented to the user and returned to the Lost & Found folder if the user chooses. (More info)

New Area Search, completely rewritten and vastly improved by Techwolf Lupindo:
    - Lightning fast results
    - Improved interface.
    - Loads of filters and options.

Fully customizable Viewer Sounds by another new developer of ours, Panterapolnocy:
    - Find them in Preferences > Sound & Media > "UI Sounds 1" and "UI Sounds 2."
    - Allows you to change the default viewer sounds to anything you have in your inventory via Copy > UUID.
    - Gives you options to play or not play particular sounds as well.
    - Report collision messages to scripts;
    - Texture refresh on sculpties;

* Flickr snapshot upload improvements and fixes by Katharine Berry of Exodus (ty!);
* New Toolbar buttons;
* and on and on and on...

IMPORTANT: Because of the many skin and settings changes/improvements/adjustments we've made it is especially important that you perform a clean install of this build.

OpenSim
OpenSim has a build, too, with lots of improvements and fixes as well!

Enjoy!

  5. Bungina, that is why you backup your chat logs, user settings. No more typing your use accounts.

Thank you Jessica and FS team for yet another awesome build. Loving the new features.

Sounds to me like user settings needs wiping. Back to defaults for everything means about 20 min per account for me.

  8. I am glad that a legacy search is back.. a little disappointed it's limited to a context menu or added as a separate button in the bottom menu instead of a search button replacement (an options in prefs could just change the shortcut/what the default search button opens). Better than nothing :)

also would love to see that the people search, shows their profile on the right instead of clicking a button to view profile, seems redundant when it could just show the profile and have the IM, Add Friend, Mute, Pay buttons there (which btw, pay and mute is missing from the legacy search and profile).

I am also very happy on how you updated the code or whatever you guys did that now profiles, about land menu, estate manager menu, etc load faster... it was really annoying how in the previous Firestorm builds how i can open the about land windows and at times (i.e. in crowded sims) be stuck staring at a menu full of unpopulated & greyed out fields or profiles that took 30+ seconds to load... does not seem to be the case anymore :)!

I really believe that you guys are one step closer at truly stealing away the users still clinging to Phoenix. just a fully integrated the legacy search as a replacement instead of a separate menu, adopt the proper default phoenix color theme (orange and grey, instead of blue, at least have the theme/color option in the prefs menu), and a few other trivial touches that FS is missing... I really believe you can succeed in gaining the majority of remaining phoenix users.

And that's coming from a diehard Phoenix user & supporter, myself.

    Great job :)!

  12. More than a dozen files couldn't be written by the install program. Before I had a somewhat working Firestorm. Now I have no Firestorm.

You had a good product (Phoenix).
Now you have abandoned a good product in favor of a hybrid turd, wasting a lot of developer time on retro-fitting something that was DOA (after spending days in the support group claiming that retro-fitting was not possible).

Do us and yourselves a favor: flush this turd and resume maintenance of Phoenix. That still is the only client worth using.

    1. This would be a read/write problem on your end Google Sucks, not a problem with the viewer or the installer but rather a permissions issue on your computer. Unfortunately we cannot fix computer problems.

      Delete
    2. No, it is and always has been a software problem. You know this. Now, you can keep lying to people who know enough about viewers and software to know when they're being lied to, with the result being that they end up resenting you and moving to a viewer such as Singularity or Cool VL Viewer that actually works and is stable, and has an intuitive user interface. Or you can grow up, stop lying to people, and give them what they want instead of stubbornly digging your heels in and acting like a petulant child who thinks her Kindergarten-level crayon scribblings should be in the Louvre replacing the Mona Lisa as the showcase piece. You can't do both.

      Delete
    3. @Archangel Mortenwold

Read/write permission problem actually _is_ a software problem. With OS. Personal Computer configurations are as complicated, as starship - both have so many various parts and thingies, that it's nothing odd if they're doing "boom" quite often. Fuel is always the same, viewers are always the same. Fuel engineers and viewers engineers can't predict _everything_, but they're doing their best to not cause the "boom". And sometimes "boom" is not fuel or viewers fault... but some errors in starship construction / OS problems.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_13#Oxygen_tank_incident

In Apollo13 mission fuel for the crew (oxygen) was okay. User (technician) dropped canister on the ground and damaged it. In the space new command was given. Boom.

    4. Not only does your reply not even address what I wrote, it has nothing to do with the topic at hand. We're not discussing operating systems or lunar missions from the 1970s gone awry. We're discussing a buggy, unstable, resource-hogging viewer with low frame rate and a user interface that's difficult to figure out. Say what you will about the V1 user interface, but it is very intuitive and easy to use.

At any rate, it's silly to discuss V3 viewers that use the V1 user interface as though they're different from the V3 viewers. They ARE V3 viewers. They simply have the V1 user interface. The problem is not the operating systems of the users or the hardware; it's the software and the poor programming of the developers, who made a conscious decision not only to abandon a highly popular and stable viewer, but to lie to and insult users in the process.

      Delete
    5. I as replying to Archangel and I'm sorry, that you've didn't catched the analogy.

      Delete
    6. Michael/Archangel: If you want a V1 user interface, you know where to find it. The rest of us are moving forward.

I can't help it if you're so mentally inflexible you can't see that something might just be better than the user interface you've obviously got far too much invested in, emotionally. But that's all right; that's why there's Phoenix mode.

And, in my experience and that of the user base as a whole, it is Phoenix that it is the one that's buggy and unstable. The crash rates bear that out. Firestorm has a crash rate that Phoenix has never achieved, over larger user numbers.

We're not lying when we say that Firestorm is far better to work on as a codebase than Phoenix. Phoenix is the result of a large number of hacks from a large number of people, and it shows: it's easily broken in ways you'd never expect if you try to modify it.

Finally, let me note that this is a volunteer project and I choose to spend my time on it as I wish. Want me to work on Phoenix? My standard consulting rate is US$100/hour. That's what it'll cost to get me to do anything in the Phoenix codebase. Not going to sign my paychecks? Then you don't get to tell me how to spend my time.

Go away. We don't need you. There are plenty of users out there that do appreciate our purely volunteer efforts.

  13. The legacy search is but a problem with it is that it doesn't close or minimize on its own after a teleport which makes it annoying to use when search hopping. The original v1 search and even v3 search get out of your way on their own after a teleport and the view of where you teleported is unhindered. When you land somewhere with legacy search in its current state it blocks the view of the world until you exude the effort to get it out of the way. It was disappointing to see a great addition to the viewer diminished by such an annoyance.

If you're on Windows, you may try to install both versions to separate install directories, set different setting files in separate shortcuts, and then separate cache directories. Still, OpenSim version works well with SL grid, just don't have Havok (used in pathfinding preview and mesh upload).

    @Adanaya Lamplight

It's fixed now by Whirly Fizzle in the changelog. :3

Okay, so how many of the additions and features listed under New Features and improvements in this build for the Havok release do I miss out on in the OS release, tho? Particularly the part about dawdling too long in the upload window not causing you to get disconnected.... the Windlight settings, the camera position customization, and stuff.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. @ NomadOfNorad

The two builds are exactly the same except that the OS version doesn't have havok. You cannot upload physical mesh objects or see navmesh with pathfinding. The SL version doesn't allow you to log into other grids. That's the only difference.

      Delete
    2. I wish the Grid Manager allowed for manual input of new grids rather than the automated version this build uses.
I have a local network OS Standalone grid running from a server accessing it from several PC's so 'localhost' doesn't cut it.
I have had to manually edit the grids.fallback.xml file to add my own remote grid.
This works but the IP address is dynamic and therefore subject to change meaning I have to drill down to dig it out again and reconfigure it manually changing multiple lines in the xml file when a manual grid manager in the viewer would make this a snap.

  17. @NomadOfNorad

OS and Havok version are very same (Phototools, file picker, windlights etc. are in both), in except of Havok thing, as I've stated above - because its license doesn't allow to use it on OpenSim grids. That's all. Please look here:

    http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Havok_Viewer_Sublicense

    ReplyDelete
  18. @Pantera Północy

Hmmmm.... I was under the impression that the license restrictions under which the TPVs were now placed applied mainly to a tiny subset of the whole Havok physics system, rather than to the entirety of the Havok physics system, specifically the pathfinder stuff and some things directly tied to it. Am I mistaken about that?

    ReplyDelete
  19. The reason I ask that is because, when I look at the SL wiki page you linked me to, and to the sublicense PDF linked in there, it simply mentions the Havok engine in general, and I had expected something that spoke of a specific, small list of elements within the Havok physics set of program hooks that the new licensing restrictions were applied to. Am I missing something?

    ReplyDelete
  20. @NomadOfNorad

No, you're not - pathfinding and some mesh uploading additions only. But even these tiny things needs library, which is under sub-license... that's why we have Havok and OS builds now, both are the same - but OS one don't have new Havok library included because of this license. Here is the 4.3.0 beta review, first page shows what new Havok is exactly doing in Firestorm:

  23. An own build for OpenSim? Oh my gosh... I can see the problem, but two separate builds is NOT a solution. Yet another trap of Linden Lab to trick the users and developers out.

@Google Sucks: you are so right, but Phoenix has GONE! So what... I'm happy to see the new V4 search functionallity! Oh no, this was not a typo, I mean V4 and not V1. I hope everybody agrees when I say the new search functionality is a step forward and not back. Never give up the hope!

@Bungina Dildanova: Lazy girl. What's 20 minutes per account compared to what you get? 2½ hours you are done. ;-)

Well, after I thoroughly went through the Release Notes of Firestorm Major Release 4.3.1.31155 I still could not see any sign of a fix that stops Firestorm users from telling me I have to rebake when I'm with Phoenix on. They often see me naked or in the clothes I've been wearing before, even after I rebaked or relogged and cleared my cache. To get that fixed would be worth much more than any of the great new features listed in this blog, features I'll probably never really use anyway.

  24. @Shy Robbiani

I still halfway think six months to a year down the road, some high muckity muck at LL is going to look back on this exclusion agreement thing... and facepalm, and say, "Good God almighty! What were we thinking?!??" And maybe then they'll reverse the restriction and go back to allowing TPVs to use all of the Havok functionality the way they used to, without any artificially tacked on restrictions to some tiny subset of them.

On the other hand, it might then be too late to undo the damage they'd done to themselves, because the horse will have already left the barn, and certain galvinizations to the development of the OpenSim worlds collectively will have already taken root and started spreading, particularly seeing as how OpenSim is now switching soon to a much better physics engine than they had before, and a number of other advancements are taking place. And at the same time, I suspect these handful of little exclusive doohickies that LL want to treat like some sort of precious crown jewels are going to amount to anything significant, and that it wouldn't have made one jot of difference to their wellbeing if they HAD let them remain open to all TPVs to implement without these extra restrictions.

    But, well, time will tell.

    ReplyDelete
  25. aren't going to amount to anything, I meant.

    ReplyDelete
  26. And by the above, I meant that giving the TPV makers an incentive to make a separate, OpenSim-oriented viewer, it also makes it easier for OpenSim dev to start breaking some things that kept them more compatible with how SL does things internally, and thereby evolve in a different direction vis a vis how the viewers inter-operate with the various worlds.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh my god oh my god, thank you so much for bringing back V1 search. I have a vision disability which basically rendered the web-based search 100% impossible to use with its tiny, tiny text and blinding white background. THANK YOU. This is the best SL early holiday present ever.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Nomad: The only part of the Havok engine that's in the viewer is in the mesh upload and navmesh viewer functions. The OpenSim build will in fact work just fine on Second Life as long as you don't need to do those two things. The restriction on those two functions is that the Havok library in the viewer is needed for them; without that, the rest of SL still works as well as it ever did.

The reason that the in-viewer Havok library isn't allowed to be used on OpenSim is that Linden Lab only bought a license for its use on Second life. They paid extra, I'm sure, for the right to allow TPVs to use it at all. I can see why they wouldn't want to pay even more to allow it to be used with OpenSim: why should they lay out big bucks to help their competition?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Google Sucks: Forget it. It would require far too much work to bring Phoenix up to the current level of Second Life technology. It would require even more work to add new features as LL developed them, retrofitting them to a codebase that's an increasingly brittle collection of hacks, cracks, and kludges held together by drying spit and baling wire.

We don't believe propping up a dying codebase is a good use of our time.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you're going to lie, child, tell one that isn't so laughably disprovable. The codebase is not "dying". The code can be updated as long as your band of viewer snobs want to update it and as long as you put the effort into updating it. You simply choose not to do so.

  39. Okay, I installed the OS version, got all my alts and my regular self set up and configured in it, set it to the opensim grid I spend a lot of time on (and turned on the feature that saves logfiles for each account to a folder with the gridname in it) and set some of my accounts up there...

So far I'm liking most of what I see, there do seem to be a couple of oddities, tho. For one thing, I have the same name on SL as on that other grid, and in fact on all the opensim grids I have an account on. After having logged into the other grid, and back out, I went to select that grid again on the drop down, and the user field went blank. I went to select Nathan Adored on the users radiobox/dropdown.... and it popped me back to having SL selected on the grids list. Is there a way around that?

Anyway, I'm hoping a later version of FS OS shows the users in the users radiobox/dropdown in the form:

    Nathan Adored (Second Life)
    Nathan Adored (OSGrid)
    Nathan Adored (othergrid)

...instead of having my name appear just in the form:

    Nathan Adored

  41. We can only build to 10x10 in this viewer? Can only confirm that in Inworldz on the Open Sim version at the moment. Inworldz lets you build to the size of a sim. SL doesn't even limit you to 10x10 anymore.

  43. Is it strange that the features I like the most are features already present in Phoenix? Legacy search, toggle crouch and no more over-use o CPU?

And the spell check is now LL's spell check, which sucks (and it does not even recognize 'sucks' on my installations, both at work and at home).
Also, a feature again present in Phoenix... autocomplete OOC comments, it only works when starting with (( and not when ending with ))

But overall, Firestorm rocks. More performance, cleaner UI (customizable, love it), and way better transparency handling.

I actually had to delay a new release for my store because of that.
I love Firestorm, but please please please fix it!

    Kind Regards,
    Kalindra.

  48. Still no tone mapping nor high precision defered rendering?
When do users realize that V3 interface relases a lot more of the clutter in screen and makes all look much better and clear (Bigger screen, free of useless tabs and bottons and so on?)
Is painfull the change? Well it took me 1 week to adjust to Niran's interface (by far the best one, sorry to say to All) but now when i see some asking for v1 features i wonder what world are they in!

  49. I love Firestorm but this time I find the SL viewer won't let me go to OSgrid. The OpenSim tab is missing and the only options are SL and SLbeta. The OpenSim viewer won't isn't made for SL or importing physical mesh. I will stay with 4.2 for now.
    Thanks,
    Kit Young

  50. Actually, I installed 4.3 OpenSim but have kept 4.2 SL because I am playing with mesh on OSgrid and want the option to load physic mesh. I renamed the shortcut and the only issue is the Windows uninstaller only sees one. I can live with that.
    Enjoy,

    1. There is still an uninstaller in the remaining install. However, at least in Windows XP, there is nothing of importance left in the Windows registry so it should be safe just to delete the remaining program folder.

  51. thanks for the new release. So far it is stable for me and not much different to the previous version. Even the flaky behaviour under bandwidth pressure seems to be unchanged. ;)

just some feedback: a 64 bit version for linux would be really welcome. And i hope there is a good reason for the "clean install" because re-doing the settings is really time consuming, and losing the texture cache is a desaster with low internet speed.

Btw, the linux standard CTRL-SHIFT-U for entering special characters (unicode) is not supported. Can this be added to the backlog?

    Thanks, guys.

  52. After fiddling with preferences, I finally got good performance out of FS 4.2. Today I installed FS 4.3 on Win 7, nVidia GeForce GTS240, intel i5 with huge broadband.

The only words I can used to describe the experince is that it is a disaster. Specifically, the lag is so bad I cannot rez or move or type.

I did a rebuild Female then rebuild inventory on an empty sim. I turned off HTTP Texture Loading which help solve my problems with 4.2. I used all the little pref settings that worked in the past. No luck.

Oh, 4.3 wiped out a lot of prefs too.

I'm going to try a full remove and reinstall. Then female fix, then inventory rebuild. Not sure what esle to do.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Update... Uninstalled 4.3, deleted all files, reinstalled 4.3, disabled (HTTP texture loading, OpenGL, VBO), reduced Texture Buffer 50%.

Logged into empty sim, fixed female character, rebuilt inventory (loaded quickly), wore normal avatar.

Performance is very poor. FPS under 1.0 on Linden sim Qunfud. Can't walk, text, anything.

On Mac OSX.8 Mountain Lion it won't boot up or at least it logs me out as soon as my avi appears. It takes ages after the log-in screen has completed the download for this to happen.I have tried removing everything from my computer and caches that refer to firestorm and reinstalling but there is no improvement
After several years I'm afraid my experience with Firestorm is about to end.

  55. I love Firestorm, I hate this new version. I did the clean install and I cant cut and paste text, rezzing is slow, I get "not responding" in my browser almost every time I use it now. I can't work like this....

    ReplyDelete
  56. Guess I got lucky. I hate "install in separate folder". I have to do that with Wings3D, and the result is that, instead, I have like version 2012, in a folder for 2011, since I just change the install location. lol There is no rational reason why this should be a problem, except.. I install this and get static_index.db2, and crash_logger.exe as "I can't install these, abort, retry, or ingore."

Feels like being back in the days of DOS.... Thankfully, from a quick log in, to see if it worked, and walk back to where I was going when the "prior" version crashed to desktop. Interestingly.. I did get pink, on nvidia, when "exiting" the program, just before it closed, and.. I am not sure if this is a viewer problem, or something they did to the region settings, but, I did get bright green water, at a distance, and pink, up close, with the specific windlight settings they where using (they corrected, the moment I crossed boundaries, so, its possible it was the setting itself, but...)

Otherwise, I haven't had any problems with the previous one. We will see what happens in the days to come with this one. :p

  57. Tested it now a few days, Seems pretty stable, Few things i did notice, Doors and the likes even 3D radars on HUD seem terribly slow when changing position. Doors in world not changing at all. A bug we seen before once to. However this time it brought something new to, people that tp within the sim to a high altitude are visually still at there old position. As in Ghosting O.o The Script edit/Object edit boom CPU usage to super high % is still there to. And seems returned also is, large linked building rezzing half to not till your right click it. Also something that seemed gone for a version or two. But all in all, an stable viewer that even though it has bugs, i would recommend to use!

The OSSL data is LGPL. It's specified in the Readme.txt.

The files are Copy & Paste into the original source because of the different VCS software used by the differing viewer dev's.

These & previous editions are currently used in Zen, Cool VL Viewer, Astra, Singularity, Angstrom, Imprudence. Which are either GPL (older V1 viewers), LGPL licenced according to their base.

  60. Followup... I tried uninstalling 4.3 then installing 4.2 fresh. Unfortunately, whatever changes 4.3 made to the executable files plagued my fresh install of 4.2. I uninstalled FS 4.2.

I did a clean install of Phoenix 1.6.1 and after inventory rebuild, all functions are back to normal, including high FPS (40-80+), texting, rezzing, movement, everything.

To be clear, prior to installing 4.3 on my Win 7, nVidia Geforce, i5 with 10/1.5mb cable. I ran FS 4.2 with as good or better performance to Phoenix 1.6. FS 4.3 is a bust.

  61. Wonderful...I like all the changes but one. Once again all prim are coming out a different color. They WERE black the last time you guys had this problem. now they're fuchsia. Only way to make things look half way ok is to turn off basic shaders. I don't need a grapics card update or drier update. This is a gaming laptop and it seems to be able to handle everything but THIS new viewer. I thought you guys fixed this problem :(

For much of what I do in SL, FPS doesn't matter that much so I use Firestorm for those times. For aviation, boating, and other vehicle use, it matters a great deal. If it were a matter of 1 or 2 FPS, I'd simply deal with it, but in my case, the second viewer I use gets far more than that amount of increase. It's not hard to maintain two separate viewers. I can hope at some point that Firestorm will catch up in that department as well.

And I would the side bar back at least it was easier to use to be honest the developers are wasting their time on this FUI stuff, they should be focusing on the bug fixes not adding new stupid features. And new skins, and I would love to have my starlight skin back in firestorm it's just plain stupid to even remove it in the first place all cause people complained about it just retarded, fix it right or don't even bother posting the software at all.
