LL & TPV's - The Interview

This Wednesday, March 7th at 3pm SLT. I, Jessica Lyon will be interviewing Oz Linden from Linden Lab about the third party viewer policy additions and related concerns. I will be representing the Third Party Viewer Community and the resident community during this interview, not specifically this project. This is not a Phoenix Office Hour and is very likely a one time thing.

During the first half hour of the show I will be asking Oz questions based on input I've received from third party viewer projects and the SL community. During the second half of the show I will ask Oz your questions providing they haven't already been answered.

The interview will take place in a private region that will not be open to the public, however you will all be able to participate and watch on the live stream here. http://treet.tv/live  Ask your questions on the live stream and they will be forwarded to me, then I will ask them for you to Oz during the second half of the show.

This is a very rare and in many ways historic event that will hopefully answer all your questions and concerns in regards to the new policy changes. The policy affects you! so be informed! Mark your calendars, invite your friends and spread the word.

Who: Jessica Lyon and Oz Linden
What: Interview with Oz linden for clarifications on the new policy additions and how they effect you and the Third Party Viewers you use.
When: Wednesday, March 7th, 3pm SLT
Where: http://treet.tv/live
Why: Because it's important!

Hope to see you on the stream!

Jessica Lyon
Project Manager

  2. One time... private region... residents not allowed...

We PAY to use this world, we should be treated like valuable customers, not like a pest to be minimally tolerated.

  3. Who appointed you to be "be representing the Third Party Viewer Community and the resident community"?

I'm pretty sure I did *not* see any election taking place on #opensl, or the osdev mailing list, or sl universe forums, or wherever.

If you truly want to "represent the community", the least you should have done is *ask* the community to submit questions for you to ask.

    1. lkalif just tells me that this was actually discussed and all that in #opensl...

  4. It's impossible for one person to represent the user community, let alone a TPV project manager who has to have a skewed perspective, in the interview. Since the vast majority of SL residents doesn't even know a TPV drama is going on Jessica can, at best, represent the most vocal Phoenix/Firestorm users.

  5. Yeah, yeah, and Scott Lawrence doesn’t represent Linden Lab because he isn’t the CEO...

  6. I do wish a small number of the TPV using community would have been invited.. I do understand the need for a closed to public meeting after the fiasco the last meeting was ... for those that didn't attempt to attend, delayed start, sim crashing and more I spent about 4 hours instead of the hour meeting. thank you Jessica!! Hopefully we will be able to send OUR questions to a moderator

  7. I hope there will be a recording of this because I cannot get on the stream

That is a daft statement, and almost certainly untrue on at leat two counts.

  9. @ Ayesha ... you are, of course, entitled to your opinion. I fail to see how anyone can fairly advocate for multiple sides in any debate? If you wish to believe otherwise that's your choice. Have a nice evening.

Jessica was representing the TPV dev community as well as the users of Phoenix and Firestorm to an extent and got some answers to some important questions (and didn't get some answers to some others which also gave a bit of information as well.)

I have to say I'm very glad Oz couldn't see the text chat going on (at least I sort of hope he didn't.) Talk about some immature trolls.

  11. I'm just grateful that OZ was at least willing to go on record and talk, and give us a response FROM THEM DIRECTLY even if many thought it was spin and circular talking. I id get some answer in a round about way to the most important things i anted to know so I'm content and pleased with the outcome, although I may not be pleased with the answers given, at least we HAVE answers.

  12. I really didn't hear anything unexpected. I am glad Oz did the interview. Being available to do this was probably more important than the information presented.

I admit to being a little amused when he pointed out that if they did NDA's with TPV devs and they were broken, what actual recourse would they have?

I also thought it was telling that the reason he gave for disliking temp textures isn't because of the loss of the 10L per upload, it's because it's a hack of a server function that was never designed for that purpose. That's pretty understandable. Maybe this time it didn't break anything, but who knows what a future hack like that might do.

  13. I could not get the program, had a few minutes then it froze then my PC crashed and could not get anymore of it when I turned PC on again, poor way to communicate with us, next time a different way please.

  14. @Cincia
Yes, it is my opinion, but I wonder, would Oz Linden have agreed to an interview with a set of TPV devs from the various leading TPVs? I doubt it.
Who would choose which TPVs would be represented?
Now I know some folks still feel that Jessica is tainted by her association with Frac and Arabella, but the fact is that she had fronted a team which has had the critical mass to at last register on Linden Lab's radar, and has got some response to some questions that the SL comminity wanted asked. OK it isn't ideal but it was better than nothing.

  15. OK one day I'll manage a post without typos. So... *had* fronted...*has* and I do know how to spell community!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ok, so will the recording of this 'behind closed doors' interview be posted here? After all the past days of drama I'd be very interested to hear what Oz Linden had to say. Thanks!

  17. @1oldavatar: The video is available at http://treet.tv/shows/specials

After listening (and in some spots replaying several times to be sure I got it) I am cautiously optimistic about the future relationship of LL and TPVs. There are some obvious points where LL's business needs and open source development clash a bit, but that's to be expected and worked around.

A transcript would be awesome for those who can't view the video for technical reasons - but I understand what a chore that would be. If some noble soul out there can transcribe 90 minutes of conversation, that would be awesome, though.

Jessica, thank you for the time and effort.

  19. Dont need to be more direct then this:
Please keep developing Tpv's for a non profit source project as Open Sim!

  20. ZZ

    Open Sim ?
Same as OSGrid or different ?
Can you give the Log In ULI for it or them please so I can set Phoenix for up for them.
I got Phoenix opperating for InWorldz but found it very light in people about 5 years behind SL I would say, is this other grid world(s) the same?

  21. These are sites (among others) you may wish to look at what with other grids:

    http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Main_Page
    https://www.avination.com/
    http://inworldz.com/

There are quite a lot of grids, but they are quite small compared to Second Life and not at the same stage of development and refinement. But is that written in stone? Maybe not.

  22. This article on the grid-market may be of interest as well:

(I think I have already posted that link in another thread on this blog, so please don’t get cranky...)

    1. Somebody told me that this article should be read with some caution. Many grids do not necessarily provide a 24/7 availability like Second Life does.

  23. There’s a written summary on this blog:

  24. Id like to echoe ZZ: Please please can you make a Phoenix (and maybe even Firestorm for those that prefer V2s) version for the OS grids. I know its another task and I know you guys dont get paid but you have so many loyal users that are starting to take steps outside SL and Phenix as it is now is functional but buggy for these other grids (I have mainly experience with Phoenix in InWorldz grid) I know that some of the new grids out there would welcome you cos they focus on what their users want and need.

Would it be possible to have a seperat team for tweeking of the viewer? Now Im by no means a tech minded person but if thre is anything at all I can help with , liason or CS or something Id be happy to do what I can.

  25. Alexandra,
The thing I find about Phoenix in Inwordz etc. is when you open SEARCH it searches SL and not the grid you are in.

    1. I have logged in to InWorldz several times. Search worked for me, but a) the viewer is searching the Linden billing server and returns an error, and b) I don’t get logged out properly — I always get the grey »You have been logged out of Second Life«-screen (or something). And my avatar there makes funny vertical moves at times.

In InWorldz you need to use the classifieds, places, people, events (I cant remember if they fixed the group seach) The ALL seach isnt currently working for any viewer in IW
Another thing is you need to disable the Bridge in the preferences in IW also . if you dont it will litter small prims everytime you TP or log in. If you dont know how give me a shout next your in and Ill drop a NC on you :)

  27. What's this about the online indicator? I use it all the time to decide whether to IM someone or not of to give items or NCs.

Are we talking about the online/offline in someone's profile? or something else?

  30. I don't like the new Firestorm one bit it looks like Phoenix which I really do not like at all.

The new Firestorm is poorly laid out and hard to find anything the previous version was much better but now my system settings are screwed up.

Time to make another switch to a consistent viewer.

  31. First of, thank you for placing the buttons in FS 4 the way I am used to and love and for giving me a chance to make it look like Phoenix!!! Absolutely love that. However, there are a few things which I noticed - e.g.: I experienced very slow rezzing of other av's and the environment with a mobile Nvidia Geforce 9800 chip on a dual core vista platform. Normally rezzing is much quicker with FS 2.3 and the previous Phoenix. I was in SL for about an hour attending a class and afterwards was only able to TP when I put the Bandwidth to 100. I also tried the latest Phoenix 1.6.1 and noticed that the inv did not load the first time I logged on. The second time I logged on to "aich" to get my contacts back the inv said "loading 768 of 3900" - that was alarming, because I have about 14000 items in the inventory.

  32. Lynx108, if you like it so much what have you done about the reciept of IMs and Notices?
I find it just plain stupid those small icons up in the top right hand corner.
    I do not notice them.
Even when I do the way they work is messy to me at least.
I think I maybe should return to Phoenix use.

  33. Hi there! I read the complaints about not having the side bar. I am glad those of us that do not want a side bar have the flexibility not to have one. Being a performer in SL means we need our screen space clear as we have our HUDs displayed and really dont want anything else showing on our screens. Thank you Phoenix for giving us a choice which LL does not.
