Bug Fixes
Based on your feedback, we've focused a lot of time on a number of performance and stability issues from the 3.2.2 release. Most of these problems were remnants of bugs in the mesh and graphics code. We've spent a lot of time working on these bugs, as has Linden Lab in their own viewer. We've incorporated ours and LL's fixes into this release and expect this to be a very stable and fast version of the Firestorm Viewer.
Credit where credit is due.. We'd like to thank Linden Lab for working on these stability issues in their own code, and making these fixes available to third party viewers. This release wouldn't be as good as it is without their efforts. As with any release we highly recommend you do a (Clean Install) with this build to avoid any potential conflicts with previous installations.

Firestorm Future! Flexible Interface!
Wow! this is exciting news! We told you in the past that the V2 interface was just not flexible enough for us to accurately mimic the V1 interface.. this still holds true today. However! we've recently merged in Linden Lab's V3 FUI (Flexible User Interface) work and while that merge has caused a lot of interface breakage we've also discovered that it is as named, VERY flexible! Zi Ree (creator of the Firestorm AO, Our All-Original Particle Editor, and Pie menu for V2) has been at it again! She has so far managed to create a Phoenix like interface option in Firestorm that is far closer to the classic UI as any modern viewer has ever accomplished! This optional skin feature is likely to be hailed the best feature ever developed on a V2 viewer for V1 users! Of course we're also working at improving all our other skins as well to give you as many options as possible. We are SO excited about this work! While this is all very much still work in progress and there's lots left to do we wanted to give you a preview of what's to come!

Enjoy the release folks! and we are very much looking forward to providing you a truly V1 skin for the Firestorm Viewer in the near future!

Sincerely,

Jessica Lyon and the Phoenix/Firestorm Team!

  7. I have a couple of questions, 1) are you ever going to bring back ORT? and is this as stable as Phoenix 1185. the 1,6 and Firefox freezes and is very unstable. would I have to get rid of Phoenix 1186 when I do a clean install?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 1) OTR is on the list.
      2) Right now, Phoenix 1185 is about the most stable viewer we've put out. We're working toward similar and better stability in Firestorm.
      3) No, Phoenix and Firestorm can happily coexist on your system. They don't interfere with each other.

  8. Oh wow... I totally love the Vintage skin. I didn't like any of the previous firefox interfaces but regretfully they had options that were too good to revert to Phoenix.
Now you have brought back the look and feel of Phoenix I realise how very much I missed a workable interface. Great work!

  10. I like that it was stated in previous blogs (for 3.1 or 3.2) that the V1 interface is simply not mimic-able, and here comes Firestorm 3.3 mimicking it fairly well :v

I doubt Firestorm will integrate CCS (combat system for CoLA) like Singularity did, but that remains one of the few major things I'd miss if I switched to FS - Assuming the V1-style UI is completed with this much accuracy or better~

  11. I did the usual clean install, then the usual redoing all the settings to the way I liked them with a few I needed to check on as they were new.

After six hours of continuous use, I'm pretty amazed. Heading the list is that I got six hours of continuous use that included many teleports into busy places with no crashes. Previously I'd have had 2-4 crashes/shutdowns on TP in that time.

The memory leak issues I had been experiencing with the previous version appear to be gone.

Initial texture rendering time and frame rates were noticeably better using the same settings as previously.

There were far fewer issues with unrendered textures.

There were fewer glitches and inexplicable pauses.

Those improvements by themselves would have been enough to make me very happy, but functions were added that I wouldn't have EVER dreamed could be included in the viewer itself. A full fledged interactive particle generator??? I have a neat inworld item that helps with that, but it's a bit clunky to use. A tip tracker? That's another hud I won't need anymore. I won't even go into the improvements to inventory management and the radar. I'd not really expected to see avatar tracking back anytime soon.

I can't speak to how much like Phoenix this version can be made to look because I don't care about that. It took about two minutes to get my usual UI set up and then I didn't think about it anymore, I just started using the viewer.

In regard to the video of what the FUI will allow, I understand the desire to show the v1 adherents how things could look. I do hope we'll also get the full capability of the FUI (side and bottom button docks) as well as enhancements that improve that beyond what LL envisioned. Many of us want the viewer of the future, not the past after all.

  23. Funny looks like a V2 browser even in *Vintage* mode. Even LL realized they needed to add back in the *TEXT* bars instead of those icons yet I don't see it here. I find it funny that the more user friendly version is called Vintage(old) and the newer clunky UI continues to dominate your builds. This version painted everything pink as well making it look like Torley went nuts on my browser not viewer. Yes I did a clean install, I think you still needed to work on this one before releasing it. Looks like the worst yet but then it will take a miracle to make one as stable and usefull as the V1 viewer.

no one promised an exactly V1 viewer, but they are trying to make it as v1 as possible. The next version, with the FUI/v3 interface , will ahve text buttons

I find it funny that the more user friendly version is called Vintage(old) and the newer clunky UI continues to dominate your builds.

And what should it be called? it cant be called v1 yet because its not exactly v1 like. Nothing is clunky about the FS interface, and vintage is pretty much the same interface as firestorm default, just with different colors.

This version painted everything pink as well making it look like Torley went nuts on my browser not viewer. Yes I did a clean install, I think you still needed to work on this one before releasing it.

The pinkness thing is not something that QA found, its impossible to test every single configuration. They did a lot of work before releasing it, just look at the release notes.

Looks like the worst yet but then it will take a miracle to make one as stable and usefull as the V1 viewer.

This one looks the same as the others, with vintage skin. How is it worse. V2 viewers are just as useful as v1 viewers, and uh oh, whats this? Second Life Beta 3.2.8 is more stable than phoenix is! *gasp* guess what, thats coming to firestorm and LL viewer, but not any v1 viewers.

  25. In this release, all the prims are pink for me, when basic shaders is ON. I didn't have this problem on 3.2.2. My graphis card is ATI Radeon HD 540v. Could you guys provide a fix for this on the next release?
BTW, thank you guys for your work on this viewer, it's great!

  26. Ugh, I cannot check what kind of changes you did cuz the viewer is closing after just a while. No matter if I log in or not, it will close by itself. 27. got multiple .dll errors on trying a clean install, had the options on them to retry which i did try and they wouldnt work so i ignored them , one of the errors thrown was the actual sl voice .exe. But the install went in and Firestorm opened up and I logged in and had sl voice and so far (so far mind you) ive had no issues at all

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yes, what's up with the SLPlug-in not installing with the program and being deemed unsafe and/or blocked? Worked fine with 24336. Also, my graphics are set on high and look like basic graphics. I had to reinstall 24336 to get everything back in working order. And, yes, I did a clean install.

      * It will open a new window; type into it "RenderMaxTextureIndex", it should auto complete it for you.
      * Once you have typed it in there should be a description of the option and a text box for the value, set the value to 0.

  50. "far closer to the classic UI as any modern viewer has ever accomplished!"

This statement reminds me of Maserati claiming to have built the first luxury sport SUV several years after BMW and Porsche beat them to it. Firestorm developers been checking in on Singularity much recently? I have to say though, I did see this one coming. In public areas, I'm still seeing countless Phoenix tags, yet more and more tags for the official viewer and Singularity while the number of Firestorm tags seems to have been at a bit of a stand-still. Did the developers finally notice and decide their prize horse of a viewer was pulling in slim odds at the races??

    ReplyDelete
  51. Finch,

Can we keep the 6th grade popularity fan mewling to the playground. Honestly I can't understand why there are so many people here who seem to find FS FAIL.

If you like Singularity use Singularity. Interestingly I find very little of this sort of thing on the other forums for other viewers. This tells me something about Firestorm.

I'm happy with the way FS is progressing. I think the team is doing a wonderful job meeting their own goals and working on the goals others hope to see met.

I prefer Firestorm to other viewers as my go-to everyday viewer. Should I get over to the Singularity and other forums and tell them in no uncertain terms why they lack for me and my special needs?

    Signed,
    Confused aka Georgie T.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Georgie Porgie,

If you would like more certain terms I can easily explain how I get a faster FPS in other mesh capable viewers in Windows, Mac OSX, as well as Ubuntu Linux than I've ever gotten in Firestorm. I could also go into a very lengthy speech in regards to FS being practically unusable while I'm on my Mac Pro Tower thanks to crashes. Also, how it oddly seems to fire up my Radeon card full blast, which I use for 3d animation rendering on my PC when Firestorm is merely launched in Windows and Ubuntu.

My statement was simply regarding the quote that I opened it with... the one in regards to the new V1 skin they're making, and how it was apparent they're finally taking more user opinion into play with Firestorm seeing as how most people in world are staying with viewers that offer the old UI (Or they're switching to the official viewer).

Do I endorse or condone Firestorm?? No, and for the reasons I've just listed along with a few others having to do with personal preference. However, I do think the developers are starting to make some good jumps now that they're trying to implement a UI the masses tend to stick with.

If you're looking for an answer as to why other viewer forums don't have as many people discussing alternatives, it's because their user base doesn't have as much to complain about (ie.. look at the number of problems people, especially outside of the Windows comfort zone, have with Firestorm). And to answer the your other question, if you feel obligated to tell other TPV developers where they've shorted you, you're more than free.. apparently that's why we have the internet and forums such as this.

  55. My current gripe - and maybe you've already fixed it with the new release - is having to open a sub-menu window to see how many prims are in a selected set or avatar attachment. I suppose this is because 'prim count' has changed to 'land impact' - but it's not very helpful for modding, when you actually want to know the prim COUNT. Maybe you could swap land impact to the 'advanced' menu and leave prim count where it's nice and obvious for building? Depends who you are trying to keep happy I suppose - builders, or land owners... ok forget I asked, that made it pretty obvious didn't it :P

    ReplyDelete
  56. Oh - and I realise that the FS team are probably only tweaking the code LL put in place, I was implying that LL are trying to make landowners happy, not you guys! I know you listen really hard to everyone and try to implement as many requests as possible, which is awesome, and why I made the above comment about the build menu ^.^ I was really happy when you made it collapsible :)

  60. Problem is, just with like EMERALD, the update the viewer to become a shitty one again.

I find ppl that still use v1, merely mediocre sl'ers. No offence, it is 2012 not 2004 or so when the grid went live.

I find the efforts of the team here really cool. But how about focus on the stability of this viewer instead of working on..

BULLOCKS to make it look OLD again!?!? I do not get it, now we face TONS of NEEDLESS updates again. Just like in the Emerald period bleeuuh.

    ReplyDelete
  61. @Finch
The dev team has, from the start, been trying to give the OPTION to make FS look like a V1 viewer for those who want that. They've gotten about as close as they could with the v2 UI. Now with the FUI, they'll be able to make it far closer, once again for those who want it that way.

Keep in mind, there are a LOT of us who don't want a V1 style interface and have found the configuration options in Firestorm have let us customize things the way we want them. In many cases, the resulting UI doesn't look like either LL's V1 or V2.

I don't understand why you are even posting here if you aren't using Phoenix or Firestorm. It would seem to make sense to post in the forums of the viewer(s) you do use and enjoy rather than post negative comments in the forums of ones you don't.

    ReplyDelete
  62. @Muziekfreak1980 Miles
Well, if you look at the third party viewer list, both the current code and the beta code (both using the FUI) are the most stable v2 based viewers. The next release of Firestorm will be based on that code so I'd expect to see it gain more stability.

That said, the current release is significantly more stable than the one it replaced even with the extra features.

    ReplyDelete
  63. @Raymond ... Going down the comment list, I can't help but notice two things. 1..You're one of VERY few OSX users not having problems, and 2.. your replies to others having problems are about on the same level as call center tech support. And I thought vaguely lame character references were out of style, not sock puppets.

@Karl... I'm a phoenix viewer user. Going between three different OS I can't stick with just one. I fully support phoenix, but as I mentioned before, I do not give any endorsement or recommendation to Firestorm. It just seems bloated and buggy compared to others, and as I've mentioned twice now, my original comment was in regards to nothing more than the developers releasing this new skin with the FUI... I think it's a nice jump in the right direction for what seems to be a lot of users' tastes. I was accused of remarking negatively about Firestorm in "uncertain terms" which is why I gave a brief outline afterwards to the problems I personally experience with it-nothing more, nothing less.

  66. I think it's less the skin and more the rapid performance of v1 viewers that folks are addicted to. v2 viewers move like they've got all the time in the world.

Hope Firestorm gives me speed! :) You're doing great, folks. Keep up the good work.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Appreciate all you do. Just wanted to mention that after a LOT of testing, I am going back to 3.2.2 which works much better for me. FPS are about one SIXTH in 3.3 than previous release. There are also some other graphics issues and that seems to be where the problem lies.

I have a Radeon HD6950 which is a happy camper for the first time with 3.2.2. Seems like a backward step happened for us ATI folks with the new codes (not necessarily yours :D).

So just adding this for info purposes. Know it works wonderfully for some and not at all for other. I was in the middle but 6 FPS compared with 48 FPS with same programs open and same timeframe and sim doesn't bode well. I pretty much knew there was an issue but tested today :D.

Still very happy with the old version as it does all I need it to do.

    Thanks again.

"I think it's less the skin and more the rapid performance of v1 viewers that folks are addicted to. v2 viewers move like they've got all the time in the world."

I agree. I use both Fs and Ph, because there are things that are easier for me in one than the other. Still, things rez slower for me in the V2/3 viewers and I have my settings more or less the same in both viewers. Yes, there is a skin in V1 that I prefer, but it's not a major issue.

I don't know if anyone else has had this experience, but for me, when things get really laggy, like a busy weekend, it seems to be much worse in V2/3 viewers.

And, as I said, this is how things are for me - your mileage may very.

  72. WOW!

For a collection of the personal desires and ambitions of the elitist developers being shoved down our throats and and considering what a massive FAIL FS is on these setups I keep hearing about. I sure see a lot of FS tags out there. Boy people are gullible and addicted to whatever is new and trendy no matter how badly engineered and unanswerable to the needs of the users it may be.

I'm sure glad I base my viewer usage on convenience, dependability, and ongoing positive development.

What? What's that you asked.... my viewer? Oh, why Firestorm of course!

    Psych!

    Love,

    Georgie

p.s. thank you devs, thank you very much

  73. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=elitist has some wonderful definitions of »elitist«.

No. 5 is my favourite because it applies so nicely here:

»A word used by the far right wing to label people who are intelligent as not being of the people. By doing so, the far right wing is insulting those they wish to reach by saying that couldn't possibly relate to anyone an IQ over 100.«

(No. 2 is straight to the point, too, but too long to post here.)

  75. Hi,

With the next update of the viewer, can you please fix something? Everything doesn't rez properly on screen for me when I tp places. With the previous version of Firestorm it was fine and Phoenix. Support didn't really help me with this. I really like firestorm but it gets annoying when stuff doesn't rez on their own. Keep up the good work though.
